Middle East Now presented the first appearance in Italy of THE NARCICYST, the charismatic and talented artist from Iraq, leading light of Arabic hip-hop. The Narcicyst gave a special performance at the opening night of the festival, presenting his last music video The Rise, and on Friday, April 10 was on stage at the Auditorium Flog, as a special guest of the concert- event organized along with Oxfam Italy, Music Pool / Network Sound and La Scena Muta.
Born in Dubai of Iraqi parents from Bassora, Yassin Alsalman grew up between the Emirates and Canada, and has become one of the big names in Arabic hip-hop in the last few years. He has an extremely eclectic personality – a true dandy, who describes himself as a “political artist” – the powerful ironic lyrics of his songs speak of his complex identity – being Arabic, Muslim and a Westerner in a post-9/11 world that is more and more absurd. He will appear in Florence solely during Middle East Now.
Together with The Narcicyst The line-up of the event we were at the opening Dre Love & The Band, an authentic experience of funk, soul and hip hop, and in closing the rousing rhythms of SHANTEL, German DJ and producer, King’s beat box that blends Balkan beat in Turkish and Middle Eastern influences, which in Florence will also present his new single “East West”, made together with the young and talented singer and musician Greek Areti Ketime.
The concert had a very special meaning: the proceeds from the evening went to support the work that it realizes Oxfam to support Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria, where from 2011 provided relief to over 1.3 million people, through the provision of clean water, shopping vouchers, contributions for the rent, comfort items and the construction and rehabilitation of sanitation.
