The 2014 edition<\/strong> of the festival featureed a full program of 52 films<\/strong> and a total of 45 Italian and European premieres<\/strong>; feature films, documentaries, animation and short films, for a full immersion that touches many of the countries that today are more and more at the center of the attention of the international medias. The most recent productions from Iran, Iraq , Kurdistan, Lebanon , Israel, Palestine , Egypt, Jordan , the UAE, Afghanistan , Syria, Algeria <\/strong>and Morocco.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Among the highlights of the film festival program, the first retrospective ever on Hany Abu-Assad<\/strong>, one of the most talented and acclaimed Palestinian directors who will bring to Florence the Oscar-nominated film “Paradise Now” and his latest film \u201cOmar\u201d – Italian premiere at the festival – the thriller “Grand Jury Prize ” at the Cannes Film Festival and nominated for an Oscar in 2014 for Best Foreign Language Film – and the screening of some of his most famous works (The 14th Chicks , Rana ‘s Wedding , Paradise Now , and the documentaries Nazareth 2000\u00a0 and Ford Transit). Hany Abu-Assad will be in Florence for the duration of the festival, with in-depth conversations about his works.<\/p>\n

THE WINNERS OF MIDDLE EAST NOW 2014:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The documentary “Returns to Homs”<\/strong> won the “Middle East Now Audience Award 2014”. A special mention to the Moroccan feature film “Rock the Casbah”<\/strong> by Laila Marrakchi, and “Condom Lead”<\/strong> awarded as “best short film” by the students of New York University Florence<\/p>\n

During the closing night of the festival, on Monday April 14,\u00a0\u00a0it was awarded the\u00a0winner of the “Middle East Now Award”<\/b>, the prize given by the public: the highest number of votes went to the Syrian documentary\u00a0“Return to Homs” by Talal Derki<\/b>. From 2011 to 2013, the director has followed the path of two friends, whose lives have been disrupted by the war in Syria. Basset, 19 years old, goalkeeper and star of the Syrian national football team; and Ossama, 24 years old, a media activist and pacifist.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0Special Mention<\/strong>\u00a0was given to the Moroccan feature film\u00a0“Rock the Casbah” by Laila Marrakchi<\/strong>, the comedy with the amazing cast that includes Hiam Abbas, Nadine Labaki and Omar Sharif, which has received a great reception from the Florentine audience.<\/p>\n

The jury of students from the\u00a0New York University Florence<\/strong>\u00a0awarded\u00a0<\/b>“Condom Lead” by Ahmad and Mohammed Abunasser<\/strong>\u00a0(aka Tarzan and Arab)\u00a0as\u00a0“Best Short Film by NYU Florence”<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And last but not least, two additional special mentions: for the\u00a0focus “Window on Qatar”<\/strong>\u00a0to the short film\u00a0“Eye & Mermaid”<\/strong>\u00a0by Shahad\u00a0Ameen; and a special mention to the short\u00a0<\/b>“Children of God”<\/strong>\u00a0by Ahmed Yassin for the section\u00a0<\/b>“Iraq Now”.<\/strong><\/p>\n
